The darkness lay heavy over Solaria tonight. In the cloudless velvet sky, the stars shimmered like pinpoints of diamond ice. The moon was little more than the barest curve, one day past new, hovering low over distant mountains. Artemis walked down a deserted road at a steady pace, keeping the distant glow of a village to her right. But she had long stopped glancing towards those beacons of light and life. She did not need it to sense the change all around her. The darkness was just as deep as it had always been, the cold bite of winter air turning each breath to steam. But the weight of the dark and the cold was simply…there. Not punishing. Just there. No longer the endless black that could make one feel the sun had no hope of piercing through to dawn. For the last few hours, Artemis had been lost in deep thought, trying to think of a way to describe this silent, invisible change. So far, she’d had little luck. But it had not been time wasted, for it had not been the only thing she had contemplated. The Festival of Frost was over. Both in Solaria and in Lunaria, the denizens of the lands had bidden the holidays a fond farewell, keeping in their minds and hearts the memories of this special season even as they packed away the physical evidence to await next year. Apollo and his Chosen had returned through the portal, carrying with them the stories and experiences, leaving this sister world to settle down and rest through the remainder of winter. New friendships had been made, new treasures found and beloved by eager pups, hearths relit with fresh fires. And Delos was still claiming he couldn’t chew properly, and had vowed over and over never to trust another raspberry caramel tart ever again. Artemis stretched her wings, dipping one down to gently brush across the frosty grass on the roadside visible peeking through the few inches of fresh powdery snow that had fallen the previous day. An almost musical tinkling echoed as she swept a glittering cloud of white into the air. A movement with no purpose save perhaps a moment of amusement and a faint glimmer of memory. But it was a fair enough distraction. Artemis let out a single soft chuckle as the white cloud drifted in front of her, momentarily obscuring the road ahead. And settling across the neck and shoulders of a massive antlered figure that had materialized out of nowhere. The sight was gone before Artemis had time to blink, let alone react. She could only stare as the misty snow slowly settled across the road in front of her. Then she looked to either side, her hackles momentarily bristling. She was absolutely alone. Had always been alone. Perhaps she was wearier from the late hour and the time spent lost in thought than she had realized. She had seen nothing in that soft cloud of snow. Except…hadn’t that nothing smiled at her? Hadn’t bright gentle eyes glittered merrily at her? Artemis slowly relaxed, letting out a long sigh. The festivities this year, sharing with Apollo, his Chosen, and all of the Lunarian visitors the special ways the season was celebrated here, had given her many opportunities to remember the lighthearted holidays of her puphood. Genuinely happy times. Of course, she hadn’t awoken to any sort of treasure waiting for her this year, but she hadn’t needed to. Her gift had been seeing the glow of joy in every face. Still…she had to confess to herself that Apollo’s first question had still not been fully answered. But as the very last wisps of snow cleared, leaving the road ahead as empty as it had always been, that long sigh turned into a smile. Who or what was Klaus? Perhaps there never would be one single answer. But at long last Artemis had hers, and as she spread her wings and lifted herself into the cold starry sky, she let the realization fade into memory. Because to her, Klaus—and the whole of the festive season—wasn’t who, and wasn’t necessarily a what. They were promises. Promises that had always been there. Promises that warmth and light would always shine, even through Solaria’s darkest nights. That was the only answer she would ever need.
