Part 6: The Time Has Come...
The Grand Admiral October 12, 2022 2:45 pm
The blinding flash had been seen from far and wide.  Hundreds of unfortunate travelers making their way home from various places were forced to stop in their tracks and blink and rub their eyes until the sunspots had cleared from their vision.  Then they took off running, countless hearts pounding in unison as they raced towards the source of the light.  All were astonished when they came close enough to the laboratory towers.  Expecting nothing but blackened rubble, some of the rising fears were temporarily eased as it became clear that the tower was still standing.  In fact, seemed entirely unharmed.  Then came the sound.

Artemis, Apollo, the Chosen, the Corps…the guardians of Lunaria and Solaria arrived on the scene just as the front doors of the laboratory burst open.  Three figures appeared as the strange noise redoubled in volume.  Two were staggering as though stunned, while the third practically strutted forward, swaying her body gracefully back and forth, completely unaffected.

“Head between your knees, dear,” Vyra said, grinning widely as she caught Nicola before the woman could fall headfirst down the front stairs.  “The shock will wear off shortly.  Old Fred seems to have enjoyed it.”

Indeed, despite still clearly being in shock, the sounds of hysterical laughter were rippling through the air as he held a heavy glass jar in his hands.  The object seemed to hum as something swirled around inside.  Before anyone could move or speak, he held the jar high over his head.

“EUREKA!” he shouted.  “The solution!  At last, the solution!”

Few were close enough to the scientist to actually see what was in the glowing jar.  Artemis stalked forward, staring into it for a moment before letting out a sharp snarl of fury.  A snarl that was cut off as a black and white paw came down over her muzzle.

“Relax, oh mighty one,” Vyra said lazily.  “These little blighters were something of a nuisance to you once, were they?  But these can’t harm you.  They aren’t alive.”

In any other circumstance, the former Glitch Queen might have very well gotten her bell rung for grabbing Artemis in such a way.  But Frederick held the jar closer to her at that moment, and a combination of shock and revulsion made pulling away and staggering backwards the only action she was capable of taking at that moment.  This close, it was easier to see the tiny creatures fluttering inside.  The segmented, golden-shelled isopterons were horrifyingly familiar…but at the same time, utterly strange.  They glinted in and out of focus, out of clarity.  They popped and fizzled, sometimes froze in place for no reason before suddenly reappearing a few inches in a different direction.

Glitching…they were glitching.

“I have my theories, my Lord Apollo,” Frederick declared.  “I promise, everything will become clear soon, but for now, I must take advantage of this!  The power contained in these beasts is exactly what we need for the portal!  And my experiments, all of my grand experiments from all these years ago, have shown me how I can capture and contain them.”

He turned to the crowd.

“The pebbles…I must have more!  All that have been found!  Fear not, my friends, for there is no danger.  Only discovery!   With Lady Vyra’s guidance, I can gather and contain the power of these new breed of the once terrible plague.  The answer is within our reach!  Now is the time!”

He suddenly reached into a pocket, revealing a handful of stones.  They looked the same as the strange pebbles, but the ones in his hands no longer glimmered so strangely.

“The hatching does not damage the cocoons,” he said eagerly.  “I am sure they can be repurposed.  Bring me the active ones, and I shall return them to you once I have harvested them.  The rewards will be great, I promise!  But let us act quickly, while the power is still strong!”

“But where do you want us to leave them?” someone in the crowd asked.  “There are so many!”

Frederick paused, thinking for a moment.  Then he glanced back at the laboratory, where Nicola was finally regaining her feet, and suddenly grinned.

“I got it!  Wait here one moment!” He gestured to Apollo and Artemis.  “Come, come with me, my Lord and Lady.  Let me show you what we have discovered.  I assure you, it is the miracle we’ve been waiting for.”
